Atiku, Sowore Fume As Court Orders Deregistration Of ADC, Accord, 3 Others

The Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by Justice Peter Lifu, on Monday, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties.

The deregistration over followed alleged failure of the parties to meet constitutional requirements for continued registration.

Filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators, the plaintiffs asked the court to compel the INEC to remove ADC, Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP), Accord Party and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) from the register of political parties.

The court orders the INEC to deregister the political parties for breach of section 225 of the constitution.

Reacting to the ruling, presidential candidate of the ADC, Atiku Abubakar in a post by his Spokesman, Paul Ibe, said "The so-called deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) along with other parties by Justice Peter Lifu may yet be the biggest manifestation of Tinubu’s hell-bent bid to undermine the opposition and entrench a defacto one-party state. The judgment is the height of judicial rascality.

"The Court of Appeal presided over by Justices Mohammed A. Danjuma, Adebunkunola A. Banjoko, Oyejoju O. Oyewumi had in Appeal CA/ABJ/CV/569/2026 and suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/2025 ordered Justice Peter Lifu to stay further action on the matter until the hearing and determination of the Appeal before it. 

"The hearing for the appeal was scheduled for the 27th of October 2026. That order was dated 22nd of May 2026", Ibe said.

Atiku drew the attention of Nigerians and the international community to "see the level of desperation of government of the ruling party to either have their way in the 2027 elections or destroy our democracy that was purchased at a huge cost."

For his part, the presidential candidate of the African Alliance Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, condemned the ruling, saying the actions was undemocratic and will not stand.

"I totally condemn the deregistration of political parties that have already concluded their primaries and are preparing for general elections. Such an action is undemocratic, and  unjustifiable in a multiparty democracy. It shall not stand!, Sowore wrote on his verified Facebook page.
