Ex-Lawmaker Onuigbo To Lead Global Body Of Climate Legislators In London

A former member of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Sam Onuigbo has been scheduled to be formally installed the president of GLOBE Legislators at the 2026 London Climate Action Week (LCAW).

Onuigbo's investure in London, United Kingdom will concide with GLOBE Legislators' 35th anniversary.

The sponsor of Nigeria’s Climate Change Act 2021 is scheduled to deliver an address at the organisation's anniversary reception at the United Kingdom Parliament on June 24.

According to the letter formally inviting him to the event and signed by the Chief Executive of GLOBE Legislators, Malini Mehra, 2026 LCAW will be held between June 20 and 28.

Onuigbo who is the current Vice President for Africa and President-designate of the organisation will be formally introduced as the substantive president as the global body establishes its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

The GLOBE Legislators is a leading international network of lawmakers committed to advancing climate action and sustainable development, and is a founding partner of London Climate Action Week which is now regarded as the world's largest and most diverse climate action festival.

The anniversary reception, scheduled to hold at the House of Commons and hosted by former UK Minister for Climate Change and former President of GLOBE International, Rt. Hon. Graham Stuart MP, will bring together lawmakers from across the political spectrum in the UK and around the world.

The central theme for the 2026 event is, "Building Political Resilience and Public Consensus for Climate Action at a Time of Severe Domestic and Geopolitical Challenges."

The event will also highlight GLOBE's contribution to major climate action priorities, including climate cooperation in a fractured world, investment and innovation for a net-zero economy, climate risk and resilience, nature and ocean regeneration, and mobilisation of whole-of-society climate action.

Mehra noted that the LCAW has become a key event in the global climate diplomacy calendar, attracting ministers, lawmakers, investors, business leaders, local governments, civil society organisations, academics and cultural institutions from around the world.

Onuigbo's role in adapting the Student-MP Climate Surgery initiative to Nigeria is also recognised as a scheme conceived to promote direct engagement between students and legislators on climate issues.

According to GLOBE, Nigeria successfully implemented the initiative in 2022 under Onuigbo's leadership through Student-MP Climate Surgery sessions organised to coincide with COP27 in Egypt.

The organisation stressed that Onuigbo's experience in promoting constituency-based climate leadership in Nigeria would be shared with international counterparts during this year's LCAW as a model for strengthening climate engagement and public participation.

Mehra noted that London Climate Action Week has become a key event in the global climate diplomacy calendar, attracting ministers, lawmakers, investors, business leaders, local governments, civil society organisations, academics and cultural institutions from around the world.

She said this year's edition is expected to surpass the more than 700 climate-related events held across London in 2025 and will feature major summits on climate investment, climate innovation, net-zero delivery, sustainable cities and energy technology.

The events will be hosted at some of London's most iconic venues, including the UK Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Kew Gardens, the Globe Theatre, Guildhall and Mansion House.

A major highlight of this year's programme will be the inaugural Nigeria Climate Investment Summit scheduled for June 23, 2026.

The summit, jointly organised by GLOBE Legislators and SoSustainability, is aimed at showcasing Nigeria's legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks designed to promote carbon markets, climate action and sustainable investment opportunities.

The organisers said Onuigbo is expected to play a leading role in presiding over the summit, which will attract lawmakers, investors, policymakers and climate experts from across the world.
