Not fewer than fifteen persons have lost their lives when a 7.8-magnitude earthquake occurred in southern Philippines on Monday, June 8, 2026.
According to CNA, the natural disaster which also damaged buildings also triggered tsunami warnings and advisories across the Asia-Pacific region.
Responding to the incident, Philippines authorities have directed responders to evacuate residents in coastal areas of the Philippines and Indonesia after the quake struck near Mindanao, while Japan and Malaysia also issued tsunami advisories.
Although some alerts were lifted as the day progressed, officials however continued to monitor conditions and assess the extent of the damage.
As of 2:08pm, the Philippines' civil defence office has reported at least 15 fatalities with Philippine police across Mindanao placed on heightened alert to assist in evacuation efforts and support relief operations.
Police have also assured of full commitment to support ongoing disaster response efforts and ensuring the safety and security in the affected communities.
Reports said rescue efforts were currently underway even as security operatives intensified security in the affected areas.
