Troops Rescue 10 Abdcuted Students, Teachers After Attack On Borno School

Not fewer than ten (10) students and their teachers abducted by terrorists earlier on Monday at Government Day Secondary School in Lassa town, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, have been rescued.

About 20 students and two teachers were reportedly abducted around 9am when the criminals stormed the school while the students were writing their National Examinations Council (NECO).

The rescue of the students by troops of Operation HADIN KAI was contained in a statement on Monday by the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni.

“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have successfully rescued 10 National Examinations Council (NECO) candidates and teachers abducted during an ISWAP attack on Lassa Community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

“Immediately upon receipt of the report of the incident, the Theatre Command scrambled both strike and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft from the Air Component of OPHK to support troops mobilised to the area for a coordinated search-and-rescue operation," the statement said.

Captain further explained that with support from the air platforms overhead providing guidance, the troops made contact around Daggu and, after the firefight, the operation has so far resulted in the successful rescue of 10 victims.

He added that the victims who were rescued unhurt were currently receiving necessary care and support, while efforts remain ongoing to rescue the remaining victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.

During the encounter, the Nigeria troops outmanoeuvred the fleeing terrorists, inflicting casualties on them and recovered seven motorcycles.

However, the statement regretted that one soldier and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force lost their lives in the rescue operation.

“Regrettably, during the intense firefight, one gallant soldier of OPHK and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force paid the supreme sacrifice in the exchange of fire with the terrorists,” he said.

Goni stressed, however, that “such cowardly acts will neither deter Operation HADIN KAI’s resolve nor diminish its commitment to dismantling terrorist networks and restoring lasting peace and security across the North East.”

The statement also reaffirmed Operation HADIN KAI's commitment to protecting civilians, safeguarding critical infrastructure and ensuring a secure environment for education and other essential services.

He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant, provide credible information to security agencies and disregard unverified reports regarding the incident.

Goni also assured that, updates would be issued through official channels as operations continue.
