Tomisin, a year three female student in the Department of Law, University of Ibadan has been reported abducted while returning from a religious retreat in Okigwe, Imo State.
The abducted student is the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, and the Vice President of the Scripture Union, University of Ibadan chapter.
Confirming the abduction in a statement on Friday in Ibadan, President of UI Students’ Union Government (SUG), Comrade Temidayo Adeboye, explained that the victim had embarked on a religious retreat with the National General Director of the Fellowship, Engr. Uwem Cosmos, and eight others when the incident occurred.
Adeboye, however, dismissed reports that eight students of the University were missing, insisting that Tomisin is the only student of the institution whose whereabouts remained unknown.
He added that the union has commenced necessary engagements to ascertain the facts surrounding the situation and has established contact with relevant religious organisations and security agencies to facilitate appropriate intervention.
The missing student was reportedly returning from the Scripture Union National Conference which took place in Okigwe, Imo State, when communication with her was lost.
Report added that Tomisin's disappearance came to light after she failed to appear for her faculty examinations on Monday and Tuesday.
Another student from the Department of Music at the University who also attended the conference however returned safely, while only the vehicle conveying the General Director was believed to have been attacked.
UI's Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Ademola Lewis, who also confirmed the incident, said the University not informed of the trip in advance.
Lewis added that efforts were already underway to secure the student’s safe return and urged members of the University community to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information that could further escalate the situation.
