A former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, was on Wednesday, discharged of all six-count bribery allegations levelled against her by a court in the United Kingdom.
Reuters reports that a jury at Southwark Crown Court in London found Alison-Madueke not guilty of the charges bordering on bribery and conspiracy to commit bribery.
The former minister who served under former President Goodluck Jonathan between 2010 and 2015 was accused of accepting bribes from oil and gas industry figures who were seeking lucrative contracts in Nigeria.
Prosecutors argued that the former minister was provided with “a life of luxury” in London in exchange for influence over the award of contracts.
However, Alison-Madueke denied all the allegations, insisting, throughout the trial that she never accepted bribes and had no direct influence over the award of government contracts.
The jury returned not-guilty verdicts unanimously on all six charges against the defendant after more than 46 hours of deliberations.
