A former president, Students’ Union Government of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Mr Lanre Adeleke, popularly known as Legacy, has declared his intention to succeed the incumbent, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the Lagos State governor.
Adeleke also announced that he will contest the Lagos State governorship election under the platform of the Labour Party (LP) in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
The former students leader announced this on July 10, 2026, at the University while addressing the gathering at the symposium held to honour the July 10, 1999, victims of the killing of 5 students at the institution.
RhemDy News recalls that five students of the institution were murdered in cold blood by suspected cultists when Adeleke was the president of the Student Union in 1999.
The victims of the assault were late former General Secretary of the Union, Mr George Iwilade, popularly known as Afrika who was then a Law student; Yemi Ajiteru, Efe Ekelemu, Ekpede Eviano and Babatunde Oke.
Reflecting on the ordeals, Adeleke reflected on his years of activism and the role it has played in shaping his political ideology.
Speaking on his governorship decision, Adeleke attributed this to his desire to translate the ideals and principles he had long advocated for into practical governance.
As fondly called, Legacy, presided over of the most troubling times as the president of the Union, displaying exceptional leadership at the time.
His uncommon courage to marshal students' resistance to molestation and strong leadership till today endeared represent symbolic and pragmatic skills to stand strong amid conflict.
Political observers believe that his entry into the political turf has changed the conversation, particularly among his contemporaries and party supporters who see Legacy as the hope of the downtrodden whose governorship can altar the hegemony of power in Lagos State.
