The Abia State Police Command has apprehended a 35-year-old Mrs Nwoko Gift, who was reportedly seen in a viral video on social media attempting to harm a young girl with a knife.
Police said the suspect, a resident of Ehimembano in Imo State has been arrested and investigation ongoing.
According to a statement on Monday by the State's Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Command said it was aware of the viral video.
DSP Chinaka stated that preliminary investigation revealed that, native of Ehimembano Imo State who resides at IBB Housing Estate, Umuahia attempted to kill her 12-year-old niece, Miss Ebo Chimamanda, who was living with her at the same address.
The PPRO explained that the suspect became furious following Chimamanda's alleged refusal to spread some clothes as instructed by her aunt before leaving for the market.
Investigation also revealed that the suspect has repeatedly beaten and threatening to kill Chimamanda.
DSP Chinaka explained that operatives from the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters, Umuahia, raced to the scene following actionable intelligence and rescued the victim.
The suspect was subsequently arrested while the knife alleged to have been used by the suspect to threaten Chimamanda was recovered by the police as exhibit.
The police spokesperson in the State added that investigation was ongoing, disclosing that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
Chinaka further assured that the suspect will be charged for attempted murder upon conclusion of investigation.
Meanwhile, the Command condemned such actions under any circumstance and cautioned members of the public to desist from such act.
Residents of the state were also urged to report such incidents to the nearest police station.
