Akwa Ibom governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has approved the sum of ₦1.968 billion to offset examination fees for students at basic and secondary education levels.
Governor Eno said the amount will be disbursed to pay West African School Certificate (WASSCE), National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) Common Entrance, Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), promotion and entrance examinations into specialized schools in Akwa Ibom State.
"I have approved ₦1.968 billion for the payment of examination fees for Akwa Ibom students at the basic and secondary education levels," Governor Eno disclosed in a post to his verified social media handles on Tuesday.
Giving breakdown of the approved sum, he said, the approval covers ₦1.368 billion for WASSCE and related expenses, ₦50 million for NABTEB, and ₦550 million for Common Entrance, BECE, promotion examinations and entrance examinations into our specialised schools.
The Governor added that with the additional ₦1.3 billion already committed to the 2025/2026 bursary scheme, his administration has invested over ₦3.2 billion in education through the new approvals.
"This reflects our commitment to free and compulsory education and ensuring that no Akwa Ibom child is denied an opportunity to learn because of financial difficulty," the governor stressed.
