Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) have arrested four (4) suspected members of the Aiye Confraternity cult group and recovered one locally made Beretta pistol and one 9mm ammunition in the Mushin area of the state.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Lagos State Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, in a statement on Monday, described the arrests as a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against cultism and other violent crimes in the State.
SP Adebisi said operatives of the VCRU swiftly swung into action following a credible intelligence on the activities of cult groups in the area and arrested one Irawo Moshod.
According to the PPRO, the suspect admitted during investigation to being a former chairman of the Aiye Confraternity cult group and made useful disclosures regarding the activities of the group, including his alleged involvement in several killings within Mushin and other parts of Lagos State.
Acting on information provided by the suspect, operatives proceeded to Idi-Oro, Mushin, where one locally made Beretta pistol and one 9mm live ammunition were recovered.
The Lagos Police spokesperson added that three other suspected members of the group were subsequently arrested at Aganran by Ojuwoye.
The arrestes persons were identified as 29-year-old Abayomi James, Farouq Bankole, 28 years; and Steven Sunday, 19 years.
Adebisi added that the suspects admitted to being members of the Aiye Confraternity, while also disclosing that the recovered firearm was got from one Rilwan, identified as the leader of the group.
Police said the suspects were currently in custody and assisting with investigations, stressing that efforts were ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai commended the operatives of the VCRU for their proactive and intelligence-driven approach in disrupting cult-related criminal activities in the State.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks and ensuring the safety and security of all residents of Lagos State, while warning cultists and other criminal elements to desist from their activities or face the full weight of the law.
