Amnesty International has strongly condemned the lawmaker representing Osun East, Senator Francis Fadahunsi, over a comment attributing him to a call for killing members of the Accord party as the Saturday, August 15, 2026, governorship election in Osun State draws closer.
The Osun East senator was seen on video during a campaign, instructing his supporters to kill members of the Accord Party ahead of the state’s August 15 governorship election.
Fadahunsi has come under intense criticism over the comment, forcing him to make clarification that his call was for voters to "kill Accord party with votes" and not members of the ruling party in the State.
Reacting to the statement on Wednesday to the All Progressives Congress (APC), federal lawmaker, Amnesty International insists that "Fadahunsi's reckless remarks were deliberate and solely aimed at inciting a bloody poll in Osun State."
The global human rights group noted that the Nigeria authorities have an obligation to prohibit advocacy of hatred that constitutes incitement to hostility, discrimination or violence.
It urged the authorities to urgently denounce any statements, live, online or otherwise, which advocate violence.
Amnesty International stressed that "Senator Fadahunsi must be held accountable."
Meanwhile, the Osun State Police Command has invited the Osun East lawmaker over the alleged comment.
In a letter dated August 11, 2026, and signed by the Commissioner of Police, Elections, Osun State, Samuel Etaifo Erale, the command summoned Fadahunsi to clarify the circumstances surrounding
the remarks.
Fadahunsi was directed to report to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Osogbo, at 11am on
Wednesday, August 12.
According to the letter, the invitation bordered on information available to the police alleging that Fadahunsi made statements considered "threatening, inciting and intimidating" during the
campaign.
