Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has disclosed that he will depart Nigeria Thursday night for a tour of the United States and Canada.
During the trip, Sowore said he will also reunite with his immediate family after a prolonged stay in Nigeria.
Sowore, who has spent his adult life defending the rights and freedoms of Nigerians, disclosed that he will "travel through Washington, D.C., following an extended period in Nigeria during which his movement was repeatedly disrupted by arrests, detention and prosecutions by the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS)".
Most recently, the DSS announced that it had instructed its prosecutors to suspend its cybercrime prosecution of Sowore over his trial for allegedly describing President Bola Tinubu as a criminal.
The decision followed months of legal battles, detention and resistance by Sowore and his legal team.
During his North American tour, Sowore will meet Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders as the AAC intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Sowore is expected to return to Nigeria before the end of September to personally resume his presidential campaign.
Sowore added that his temporary absence will not slow down the campaign.
"The #Sowore2027 campaign will continue at full strength across Nigeria. Sowore will participate virtually in campaign activities while abroad and will physically attend relevant engagements with Nigerians in the diaspora across North America.
"The message remains unchanged. Nigeria needs revolutionary transformation, equal rights and revolutionary justice, not another recycling of the political establishment," the presidential candidate in a post to his verified Facebook page on Thursday.
