Oyo State Government has pledged to expel bandits out of the Old Oyo National Park and surrounding forest reserves.
The promise followed Sunday's attack on an Operation Burst security base along the Igbeti–Igboho Road by suspected terrorists.
Acting Governor of Oyo State, Barrister Bayo Lawal gave the pledge when he visited the attacked base on Monday.
Barr. Lawal said the government would not allow the vast forest to become a sanctuary for bandits and other criminal elements.
Although no life was lost in the attack, the building accommodating security personnel and an operational vehicle were reportedly set ablaze by the hoodlums.
The Acting Governor said additional troops have been deployed to the area, while assuring that the government will rebuild and strengthen the security base and clear surrounding vegetation to improve surveillance.
He also warned residents, informants and illegal miners against harbouring or supporting criminals, stressing that anyone found aiding bandits would face the full weight of the law.
RhemDy News recalls that the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state on Monday condemned Governor Seyi Makinde over the Sunday attack.
The main opposition party in the state maintained that the incident raised a lot of questions on the whereabouts and functionality of the multi-billion Naira surveillance aircraft recently purchased by the Governor Makinde-led administration.
In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, on Monday, Oyo APC said it was ironic that the criminals operated for so long in the area where the state government claimed to have deployed the aircraft for operation.
