5 benefits of having annoying people in your life

Having friends brings many benefits to our lives. We view having friends as being a positive influence, otherwise why would we hang out with them, right? Well, there are some very solid benefits to having friends that annoy you. Below I will show you five of these benefits. At the end, my hope is you will come to appreciate some of those annoying friends of yours or even appreciate some of the idiosyncrasies the friends you care for the most have.

1. Teaching Patience

This is probably the one area that many of us need help with. It is easy to listen to someone when they are telling you what you like or want to hear. However, sometimes, you may gain valuable nuggets of information from those that can be quite annoying. Learn to be patient with all those interact with and you may find you can gain some interesting insights and maybe even learn something new.

2. Encouraging Open Mindedness

We tend to find favor and be more interested in what others have to say, as long as we agree with it. The truth of the matter, is whether or not we agree with something doesn’t make it any less true. The next time that annoying person tells you something you don’t agree with, don’t automatically dismiss it. Take a moment to see if there is merit in what they are saying. Being open to an opposing viewpoint can bring greater clarity to your way of thinking.

3. Improving Listening Skills

As mentioned in the benefit above, it is easy to listen to someone when we agree. However, when someone annoys us many of us simply want to shut them out – we stop listening. By doing this, we rob ourselves from developing one of the most important life skills one can learn and that is listening. When we are being annoyed, it takes that much more effort to listen to what someone has to say. The harder it is to listen, the strong we can build our “listening muscle”. The next time you want to tune someone out, resist the temptation and practice listening.

4. Learning Appreciation

By understanding the previous three benefits, in time, you will come to appreciate the diversity of thought these “annoying people” can bring to your life. Some will challenge you while others will down right annoy you to the point of wanting to inflict bodily harm. If you take a step back, you will begin to learn to appreciate your differences. This appreciation can translate to appreciation in other areas of your life with even the simplest of things like music or food. While I’m not suggesting that all annoyances good for you; however that can open new areas of your life you can appreciate and enrich your overall being.

5. Challenging You To Be Better

This benefit is an interesting one, especially for those that don’t think they need to change or are good enough. When dealing with someone that annoys you, there will be times where you have to take the high road or be the better person. Putting this into practice is much easier said than done. However, if you can embrace this challenge, you will find yourself looking for ways to be and do better. In the end, thinking and acting this way can only serve to improve your life.

Conclusion

We have taken a look at 5 benefits that annoying people can bring to your life. Can you think of anymore? When we look at the diversity around us it’s easier to gravitate to that which is more familiar, comfortable, and likeable. I challenge you to learn to see the beauty in these annoying people and accept them for who they are. By doing so, the one who stands to benefit the most is you.

What to Know About Meat and Cancer

A World Health Organization (WHO) group declared recently that processed meat, such as hot dogs and bacon, causes cancer and red meat may as well.

The determination was made by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is the arm of the WHO that gives recommendations based on cancer risk.

The group, which included 22 scientists from 10 countries, evaluated the carcinogenicity of red and processed meat based on available research.

The group classified processed meat as carcinogenic to humans “based on sufficient evidence in humans that the consumption of processed meat causes colorectal cancer,” the agency said in a statement.

They classified red meat as “probably” carcinogenic to humans due to limited evidence it causes cancer, and strong evidence that it supports a “carcinogenic effect.” The findings were published in the journal The Lancet Oncology.

Here’s what you should know about the news.

What’s the link between eating meat and cancer?

The IARC looked at more than 800 studies on the link between red and processed meat and cancer risk and determined that every 50 gram portion of processed meat eaten daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%.

The agency is not the first to reach the determination that processed meat, and possibly red meat, increases the risk of colorectal cancer—which is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.

The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) and the World Cancer Research Fund have also concluded that eating even small amounts of processed meats on a regular basis can increase colorectal cancer risk.

How does red meat cause cancer?

The mechanism behind the link is still under investigation, but there are a few possible explanations.

First, there’s nitrates, which are preservatives added to some processed meats and have shown in some research to produce cancer-causing compounds. Another possible factor is the smoking process that goes into many processed-meat products.

Smoked meats contain Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are compounds that develop at high heat and are considered carcinogenic. PAHs and other chemicals called Heterocyclic amines are formed when meat is cooked over heat and have been found to damage DNA.

“For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed,” Dr. Kurt Straif, head of the IARC Monographs Programme said in a statement. “In view of the large number of people who consume processed meat, the global impact on cancer incidence is of public health importance.

Does this mean I should stop eating red meat?

The IARC is not saying that everyone should completely stop eating red or process meat altogether, but that people should consider limiting their intake. That’s in line with other recommendations that say limiting red meat and eating more plant-based foods can have significant health benefits.

As TIME has previously reported, not all meat is created equal, and many nutrition experts support avoiding processed meat. Unadulterated lean red meat offer of high-quality protein, iron and B vitamins.

“These findings further support current public health recommendations to limit intake of meat,” Dr. Christopher Wild, Director of IARC said in a statement. “At the same time, red meat has nutritional value.

Therefore, these results are important in enabling governments and international regulatory agencies to conduct risk assessments, in order to balance the risks and benefits of eating red meat and processed meat and to provide the best possible dietary recommendations.”

How can I lower my risk?

Limiting the amount of processed meat and possibly red meat is a place to start. Consider replacing some of the processed meat you consume with fresh versions of meats like chicken. You can also try out other kinds of protein, like eggs and legumes.

How to make your iPhone faster with this one simple trick

It's super easy

For as long as iPhones have been around, Apple’s company line has been that its mobile operating system, iOS, does an excellent job managing the device’s memory in the background. That means there’s no reason that users should have to quit apps, and those periodic fits that computers throw when they’re overtaxed shouldn’t happen on iPhones or iPads — at least in theory.

But in reality, users know too well that Apple’s mobile devices can melt down, too. It might not happen frequently, due to iOS’s superb application memory management, but it still happens. And until recently, it was believed that the only way to cure a cranky iOS device was to give it a restart.

But last week, years of Genius Bar advice got turned on its head when iPhone enthusiast Marc Forrest posted a way to clear memory in iOS without resetting the device. Here’s how to do it — and potentially make a slow iPhone much faster in the process.

1. Start by unlocking your iOS device. That means the display will be lit, and either the home screen or an app can be showing, but not the lock screen.

2. Hold down the power button until the “slide to power off” option appears on the device’s display.

3. Next, release the power button, and then hold down the home button for roughly five seconds.

And just like that — poof — the iPhone’s memory, or RAM, is refreshed.

It may seem like this fix is too quick to make a big change in your device’s operation, but upon closer inspection, you’ll notice some telltale signs that show your Apple gear has indeed improved. First, as the home screen reloads, watch the menu bar refresh. This doesn’t typically happen when you tap the home button, but it does when you reset or start up the device cold. Secondly, double-tap your home button to pull up the device’s quick launcher. All of your formerly-opened apps will still appear to be running in their last-viewed state, but when you tap on any of them, you’ll notice they reload. They have been suspended, and are now coming back to life.

At least 100 people were killed and over hundred others injured when the  Boko Haram terrorists attacked Dalori Village some 4 kilometers from Maiduguri Saturday evening.

Residents of the community told SAHARA REPORTERS' correspondent that the operation started around 6:20 pm and lasted for several hours.

The militants who operated unchallenged were said to have stormed the town in 10  Hilux vans and motorcycles dressed in army uniforms as they took their time to raze down houses in Dalori village also livestock were burnt after they had looted and carted away foodstuffs. Nigeria faces currency woes in wake of oil price plunge

Onele Vincent and his colleagues are fed up with the rising cost of living. So they decided to do something about it and led a noisy protest at a top Lagos hotel where they work.

“Things are more expensive, rent is high, food is high,” Vincent told AFP last week in the lobby of the Southern Sun hotel, a favourite of the monied elite, politicians and expatriates.

Everything has increased and yet the staff salary has remained the same.”

Vincent and the other hotel workers are far from lone voices in Nigeria, where many are feeling the pain as Africa’s biggest oil producer struggles to adapt to the record lows of global oil prices and its naira currency is under devaluation pressure.

Daily newspaper headlines warn of “Hard times ahead”, while many billboards in the commercial hub of Lagos stand stark white, just blank signs, an indication that companies are trimming costs.

Even high fliers are taking a hit. Importers of French wine complain that demand has dried up. Luxury car dealers and real estate agents say business has dwindled.

Africa’s leading economy is projected to have grown by 3.0 percent in 2015, its slowest pace in over a decade, according to an International Monetary Fund report in January.

Unlike Norway, which invested hundreds of billions of dollars of its oil money into stocks, bonds and real estate, Nigeria spent its riches when times were good.

Now that crude prices have slumped more than two-thirds since $100 per barrel in mid-2014, Nigeria is exposed.

Dollar reserves currently stand at a low of $28 billion — $20 billion less than in April 2013. There is only enough for five months of imports for a country heavily dependent on foreign goods.
– ‘Lack of direction’ –
While the huge drop in oil prices is a major headache for Nigeria, analysts say it is the government’s response that is the biggest cause for concern.

The central bank governor, Godwin Emefiele, on Tuesday dismissed calls to devalue the naira in his monetary policy committee statement.

Instead he chose to continue propping up the currency at 197-199 naira to the dollar and maintain foreign-exchange restrictions.

As a result, the naira on the black market is hovering around a record low of 305, fuelling complaints from domestic and foreign businesses who can’t access dollars needed for imports.

With little domestic manufacturing and years of under-investment, mismanagement and corruption in the oil sector, Nigeria depends on imports for almost everything, from milk and machinery to petroleum products.

Jittery investors, fearing the inevitable devaluation of the naira, have held off doing business in the country until there is a clearer monetary policy.

The situation right now is causing a lot of anxiety and uncertainty because no one knows how to plan for it,” said Anna Rosenburg, emerging markets analyst at Frontier Strategy Group.

Everyone is complaining about the lack of direction from the government.”

Attempts to shore up the naira are designed to protect the nation’s dollar reserves.

But the tight forex controls have led to accusations growth is being strangled in Africa’s most populous country.

“At this stage, a weaker naira is less important for fostering the resumption of needed international investment flows than the lifting of the foreign exchange restriction,” JF Ruhashyankiko, a Goldman Sachs economist, said in an investor note.

Now Nigeria is in limbo, badly needing foreign investment but unable to get any.

“If you’re not attracting those inflows and you’re not generating a surplus from the export of oil, then it’s going to be more difficult to sustain foreign exchange reserves where they are,” added Razia Khan, an economist at Standard Chartered Bank.

That could impact on its perceived credit worthiness, which isn’t a good thing when Nigeria is thinking of borrowing externally to fund some of its more ambitious infrastructure programmes.”

President Muhammadu Buhari last month announced a record six trillion naira ($30 billion) budget to avoid a recession, planning to pour money into massive road and railway projects.

But the budget is based on an oil price of $38 per barrel, above the current market price of around $33, and relies heavily on borrowed money.

After Buhari remarked in December that he would consider devaluing the naira, some investors took it as a sign the currency situation would be resolved early in the new year.

Yet on Thursday Buhari put those hopes on the back burner, saying on a visit to Kenya he will not have the naira “killed” and is “optimistic” his policies will soon stabilise the economy.

External reserves drop to 11-year low of $28.1bn

President Muhammadu Buhari.

The nation’s external reserves fell to $28.1bn on January 28, 2016 the lowest level since 2005, data from the Central Bank of Nigeria showed on Friday.

The foreign exchange reserves had stood:

December 30, 2015: $29.13bn

December 31, 2015,  $29.070bn, reflecting a decline of 15.79 per cent year-on-year from $34.52bn in December 2014..

January 7, 2016: $28.931bn

January 8, 2016:  $28.895bn

January 11, 2016: stood at $28.782bn despite the stoppage of foreign exchange sale to Bureau De Change operators !!!!

Reasons for the drops in Nigerian External reserves?

1. The major mean though which Nigeria earns FOREX into the External reserves has been through Crude Oil Export sales. Over the past 3 months, tumbling crude oil had trades below $30 a barrel for first time in 12 years!!!

2. Even with 1 above going on, Nigeria continue to use the FOREX in the  External reserves to import foreign made commodities and products to meet the consumption of its over 180million population. Nigeria spends billions of $$$ yearly on imported petroleum products, imported steel, imported rice, imported petrochemical products, imported tomato paste, imported bituminous asphalts, imported wheat, imported flour etc rather than LOCAL PRODUCTION. These are KILLERS TO THE EXTERNAL RESERVE.

What MUST be done for Nigerian External reserves to rise again??

1. When global crude oil price improves again.....

2. When Nigeria is able to be self sustaining via local production of petrol, kerosene, diesel, fertilizer, petrochemicals, steel, rice, tomato paste, bituminous asphalts, wheat, flour etc

A nation’s foreign reserves are usually an indication of the health of its international trade, with import-dependent countries often disadvantaged in their current account balance as a result of forex expenditure outstripping income.

Boko Haram insurgents now disguise as lunatics - Army

Boko Haram terrorists have devised new tactics to unleash terror in the No rth-east region of the country, They are now “disguising as lunatics” to attack soft targets with their Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the region.

Their new strategy was contained in a statement signed by the Acting Director of Defense Information, Col. Rabe Abubakar, on Saturday.

The statement reads in part: “It has come to the notice of the Defence Headquarters that Boko Haram, in their desperation to cause colossal havoc, have now devise a new method, where they dress like mad persons to gain unsuspecting access to public areas to detonate bombs. The two male suicide bombers who dressed like mad women and carried out suicide bomb attack in Gombi, Adamawa State, is instructive in this direction. Five people lost their lives and several others were wounded in the heinous attack by these ungodly people.”

Abubakar, in the statement, also urged citizens across the country to be wary of mad persons approaching markets, public places or crowded areas so as to nip any attack in the bud.

“Nigerians are also enjoined to be security conscious at all times and should endeavour to report any suspicious person or object to security agencies for prompt action,” he said.

Those who plotted my transfer want me to suffer - Fr. Mbaka

Catholic faithful wept freely Saturday, as its fiery priest and founder of the Enugu Adoration Ministry, Rev Fr. Ejike Mbaka, moved to his new parish at Emene, a suburb of the state capital.

Thousands of the church members, who thronged the Christ the King Parish (CKP), GRA, Enugu shed tears as trucks, buses and cars lined up to convey the belongings of the priest and the Adoration Ministry out of the premises. But Fr. Mbaka, who managed to control his emotions, as he looked through the wailing crowd had while describing his transfer as the will of God, said he was convinced the leadership of the church approved it to make him suffer.

He said those who plotted his transfer want him to suffer, as they did not consider his security and where he would put his head.

Reviewing how much he had contributed to building the CKP parish from 1997 when he was posted there without any structure till now, he stated that he had been transferred to a location where there was not enough provision to enable him continue his ministry.

He said: “I know I am going there to suffer within now and few months. I am going to suffer because I have no place to put my head.  I am going to suffer because I have no place to keep the ministry’s assets. I know I am going to suffer and fortunately it is going to happen in the month of lent. Although, I have accepted it as the will of God, it is a mega suffering. All these while, we have been keeping the vineyard and building the Christ the King Parish. All the money I got from my cassettes and crusades were spent on the church, the school and parsonage.

Decrying what he described as attempt by some persons to politicise the church, by feeding the Bishop with falsehood, he noted: “I am giving God the glory and I welcome the church’s choice and action with absolute acceptance and obedience.

So, there is no negation to what God has approved and what the church suggested. Nobody should see me as a recalcitrant priest. I am not. I have taken an oath of obedience and I stand on it,” he said.

20 Health Mistakes to Stop Making Before You Turn 40

Want look and feel young into your 40s and beyond? Now’s the time to hit the refresh button.

“When you’re in your 20s and 30s, you have forever”—or so you think, explains Heather Provino, CEO of the workplace wellness company Provant Health Solutions Inc., in East Greenwich, R.I.

But health and lifestyle errors can sneak up on you in midlife and, next thing you know, a routine checkup finds your blood pressure’s up or your blood sugar’s out of whack.

“If you’re not using 40 as that check-in point and that turnout time, those issues will start compounding,” leading to chronic conditions, like heart disease and diabetes, says Provino, an exercise physiologist and sports psychologist.

Here are some common mishaps and tips to get you back on track.

Being addicted to your mobile phone

Are digital devices making us sick? A 2011 Harvard review links prolonged television viewing with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality. More recently, researchers at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston found that blue light—the kind emitted by tablets, cell phone, e-readers and other devices—disrupts the body’s natural circadian rhythms, making it harder to get a good night’s rest.

“We’re creating a generation of sedentary behavior that wasn’t natural, say, even 20 years ago,” Provino cautions.

Tip: Take a 10-minute standing break every hour that you’re using your screens.

Not making sleep a priority

Like your cell phone, your body and brain need time to reboot and recharge. Adults 18 to 64 require about 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night. Skimping on shuteye does a number to your health, including raising your risk of hypertension, stroke, and obesity. It may also be a factor in depression, and there’s evidence that being sleep deprived promotes biological aging, making you look older than you are.

Tip: Create a relaxing bedtime ritual—no cell phones in bed, please—with these 7 tips for your best sleep ever.

Failing to floss

A good flossing regimen sweeps away sticky, germy plaque that can build up on teeth and under the gum line like cement. If you don’t get rid of it, it can ruin your smile. Gum disease typically appears when people are in their 30s or 40s, and men are more likely develop it than women, says the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Studies also suggest that diseased gums may be harbinger of heart problems.

Tip: If stringing floss around your pearly whites is a nuisance, try one of the many “interdental” picks, sticks, brushes, or water flossers on the market.

Skipping meals

Daytime fasting may seem like the perfect dieting hack. Wrong: You’re more likely to overeat or splurge on junk food later in the day. Over time, missing meals can muck with your metabolism, setting you up for type 2 diabetes. Nearly two-thirds of adults with diabetes get diagnosed between ages 40 and 64.

Tip: Katharine Taber, M.D., a board-certified gynecologist and director of the Women’s Wellness Center at LifeBridge Health, based in Baltimore, urges patients to kick off the day with a healthy breakfast. “A, it helps with weight loss; B, it gives you more energy and concentration throughout the day,” she says.

Ignoring health warning signs

A wincing pain? A peculiar discharge? When your body offers clues that something’s amiss, pay attention. Identifying health problems as early as possible often makes them more treatable. “The number of women who won’t tell you they found a breast lump is astounding,” Dr. Taber says.”They just want to know if you (the OB/GYN) feel it.” Many patients are afraid, embarrassed, or think they may be wrong, she explains.

Tip: Prepare a list of questions and concerns to share with your doctor before your visit.

Sneaking a cigarette (or two)

Attention tobacco cheaters: If you’re stealing away for a smoke, you’re a smoker, and that raises your risk for heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, and other nasty conditions. Snuffing out your cigarette habit before age 40 slashes the chance of premature death from smoking-related diseases by 90%. Quitting in your mid-40s to early 50s lowers your risk by two-thirds. In other words, you can reverse much of the damage to your body.

Tip: Visit Smokefree.gov for advice and free resources on breaking the nicotine addiction.

Eating too much sodium

Sodium has a stealthy way of holing up in people’s diets even when they’re not tipping the saltshaker. It’s in bread, processed meats, soup, cheese, sauces and dressings, among other staples. Most people consume more sodium than their bodies require. The daily recommended max is about half a teaspoon. Too much of it can cause hypertension, a major cause of heart attack and stroke.

Tip: Read packaged food labels carefully and stay under 2,300 mg a day (1,500 if you have high blood pressure).

Being dehydrated all the time

Water nourishes every cell and organ in your body, including your skin. It’s even more important to stay properly hydrated as you age because older adults may lose some of their sense of thirst. Indulging in a morning cup of joe or afternoon soda-pop counts toward your daily water intake, but straight-up water is better because it’s caffeine- and sugar-free.

Tip: If you pee is dark yellow, it may be a sign that you need to boost your H2O intake. (It should be clear or light yellow).

Avoiding dairy products

Women who shirk dairy to shave calories from their diets or ward off gas and bloating aren’t doing their skeletons any favors. “Calcium intake in the 20s and 30s is really, really important for preservation of bone health,” says Lisa Larkin, M.D., director of the University of Cincinnati Women’s Health Center. “Peak bone mass is achieved at about age 30, and it starts to decline after that,” she says.

Tip: If you’re not consuming 1,000 mg of calcium a day through various food sources, consider taking a calcium supplement, Dr. Larkin advises.

Lying to your doctor

People lie, and doctors know it. In one survey, 77% of health professionals said at least one in four patients omit facts or lie about their health; 28% believe half or more withhold the truth. Since health issues become more prevalent as we age, even little white lies may pose a danger to your health.

Tip: Come clean: “Physicians can only address what they know about,” says Dr. Larkin.

Skipping the weight room

A well-rounded exercise regimen wouldn’t be complete without strength training. It can help you tone muscle, boost metabolism, and build strong bones. Research shows it improves flexibility, balance, and aerobic capacity, too. These fitness benefits become even more crucial as we age. Roughly half of all women 50 and older suffer hip, wrist, or spine fractures in their lifetime, but bone-building strength exercises can lower the risk of brittle-bone disease.

Tip: Incorporate free weights, weight machines, elastic bands, or resistance training using your own body weight (think push-ups and squats) into your fitness routine.

Not having sex

With young children and work obligations, sex often gets pushed aside in your 30s. But as the kids get older, sex should move back up your priority list, notes Dr. Taber. Maintaining a healthy sex life, even as you enter middle age, is an important part of intimacy. “It’s harder to reinstitute a healthy sex life once you’re neglected it,” she says.

Tip: Talk to your doctor if sexual intercourse is uncomfortable—there are treatments available, adds Dr. Larkin. You should also read up on these 10 ways to deal with painful sex.

Sunbathing

Laying out in the sun or using tanning beds exposes skin to damaging ultraviolet radiation that prematurely ages the skin and greatly boosts skin cancer risk, including melanoma, the deadliest form of the disease. Using sunscreen and protective clothing can help. “It doesn’t erase the damage from the past, but it’s protective going forward, just like stopping smoking,” says Ronald Brancaccio, M.D., director of The Skin Institute of New York and clinical professor of dermatology at New York University School of Medicine.

Tip: Crave a sun-kissed glow? Fake it by applying a cosmetic bronzer. Here’s how to do it in four steps .

Sipping sweet drinks

You probably already know that drinking soda and other sugary beverages is a surefire way to pack on pounds. But if you think you’re doing the right thing by swapping sugar-sweetened soft drinks for artificially sweetened versions, think again. The latest research suggests drinking diet soda is associated with weight gain, insulin resistance, and diabetes. A Tufts University study found women who drink cola—diet or regular—had lower bone mineral density. “You’re actually pulling nutrients out of the body,” says Monique Richard, RDN, owner of Nutrition-In-Sight, in Johnson City, Tenn. (Here’s a rundown of all the reasons you need to ditch diet soda.)

Tip: Follow this guide to squash your soda habit for good.

Eating too much processed food

Grabbing a bag of chips before hitting the gym is not the optimal way to fuel your body. Over time, all that sugar, fat, and sodium—the secret to making processed foods tasty—can do a number on your waistline and your health. Replacing a diet packed with microwave meals, snacks, and processed meats with whole grains, fresh produce, and lean meats is the way to go. “It’s very convenient to go through a drive-through, but it’s also pretty convenient to boil some water and put it in some oatmeal,” Richard reasons.

Tip: Pack your fridge and pantry with the 20 foods you should always have in your kitchen.

Bingeing on alcohol

Most of us know that consuming excessive amounts of alcohol is toxic to the body. “It’s dehydrating, and it’s a process that your body can’t get over as quickly, especially as you get older,” Richard says. Moderation is the key: no more than one drink per day for women and two for men.

Tip: One serving means a 5-ounce glass of wine, a 12-ounce beer, or a shot of distilled spirits. Here’s how to pour a perfect serving of wine.

“Friending” instead of socializing

You’re cheating yourself if you rely on Facebook and Twitter as your social outlets. “Being around human beings is critically important for our mental wellbeing,” and that influences our physical health, Provino says.

Tip: Take a break from social media to hang out with friends and family, and check out these seven tips to succeed at a digital detox.

Failing to discuss family health history

Like it or not, your genes matter. If, in your 30s, your physician doesn’t know there’s a history of breast or ovarian cancer in your family, she may not order the appropriate screening and surveillance tests to help identify problems early on, when they’re more treatable.

Tip: Learn your family’s medical history and share it at your next appointment. “That will impact recommendations from your physician,” Dr. Larkin says.

Not making time for preventive care

Women in their 30s “don’t really take the time to take care of themselves, and so stuff gets missed,” says Dr. Larkin. So, if you’re not monitoring your cholesterol, you could be setting yourself up for heart disease in your 40s and 50s. And if you’re putting off annual pelvic exams, routine pap tests, and clinical breast exams, you could be missing early signs of cancer.

Tip: Taking preventive measures as a young adult can make a huge difference in your wellbeing as you get older. Stay on top of the 19 medical tests everyone needs.

Skipping recommended vaccines

Kids aren’t the only ones who need their shots. A half-dozen or so immunizations and boosters—including vaccines that protect against influenza and chicken pox—are recommended for adults. Many others may be appropriate depending on a person’s risk factors and vaccine history. About 50,000 adults die every year from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Tip: Getting vaccinated protects yourself and reduces your risk of getting sick and spreading the disease to others.

FIRS director in EFCC net for tax fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Abumere Joseph Osagie, a Deputy Director, Regional Tax Office of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), for allegedly attempting to extort N5 million from the Chancellor of Baze University, Abuja, Senator Ahmed Datti.

He was arrested with one Jamila Ojora for abuse of office and bribery.

A statement issued by the Head, Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren,  said the FIRS deputy director was arrested following a complaint about his attempt to extort a university chancellor’s N5million.

The statement said: “Osagie and one Jamila Ojora had on January 27, 2016 allegedly approached Senator Ahmed Datti, the Chancellor of Baze University, Abuja and gave him a tax assessment of N20,029, 496.00 through a letter of intent, which he paid.

“However, when he requested for the assessment certificate, they refused to oblige him. Instead they allegedly demanded for N5 million gratification. All pleas by him fell on deaf ears.

“Consequently, he petitioned the EFCC, and was advised to play along. Consequently, marked N5million was delivered to the director through Ojora in a sting operation. Ojora was arrested after she collected the N5 million. Her confession led to the arrest of Osagie.

“The houses of the suspects were searched by operatives of the EFCC and documents recovered. Investigations continue.”

8 Things You Didn’t Know About Sexual Satisfaction

People who have regular orgasms live longer, seem to have less stress and enjoy lower rates of heart disease, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and endometriosis. You can be allergic to orgasms. They don’t induce labor in pregnant women but they can cause a seizure. Circumcision causes orgasm problems for both men and women.

Women orgasm only 35 percent as often as men in first-time sexual encounters. The key to a woman having an orgasm isn’t foreplay, it’s more sex. Females in their 30’s have more orgasms but not more desire. Women have a number of different kinds of orgasms. Scientists think they may know why females orgasm at all.

Women fake orgasms to hold on to a guy they think might be prone to straying. One in four men has faked an orgasm. Middle-aged and old men are more likely to fake than young men; young and old women are more likely to fake than middle-aged women. Love increases the likelihood of faked orgasms.

You can tell how orgasmic a woman is by looking at her face, by how she walks, her level of emotional intelligence, and whether she likes politics. Women who remove their pubic hair have better sexual function.

A woman’s level of sexual satisfaction can predict her mental health and physical health. Birth control pills make women more likely to pick men who satisfy them less sexually but make them more satisfied with their relationships. Shorter women are usually more sexually satisfied than taller women because of the reduced distance between their clitoris and vagina. The “g-spot” does exist.

Rich guys don’t give women more orgasms but the women they sleep with do orgasm more — that’s because the women rich men have sex with are younger, happier, healthier and more educated. Women do orgasm more with masculine guys, handsome men, and men with symmetrical bodies. Here’s why the ladies can’t get enough of James Bond.

Here’s a list of factors associated with sexual satisfaction. Sexual satisfaction early in a marriage keeps couples together years later. Age difference has a big effect on how sexually satisfied husbands and wives are. Here‘s a list of what keeps men and women sexually satisfied over time.

Here’s one you probably knew but let’s put the issue to rest: Yes, men want sex more than women. Yoga improves sexual function in both males and females. (Personally, I doubt yoga has special powers, I think it’s just exercise that does the trick.) The more a man uses porn, the less happy he is with his relationship. The more a woman uses porn, the happier a man is with his relationship. Increasing the amount of good sex you have is more about self-esteem than getting kinky.

FG, Labour may clash over electricity new tariff

Organised Labour on Friday cautioned the federal government against implementing the new electricity tariff, to avoid industrial crisis in the country.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the Electricity Consumer Protection Forum gave the warning at a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos.

Ayuba Wabba, NLC president, said that labour would mobilse workers and civil society groups to protest and picket all the electricity distribution companies should the federal government implement the tariff as scheduled on February 1.

Wabba described the 40 to 45 per cent increase as exploitative and illegal, and urged Nigerians to reject it.

“We reject the tariff increase, based on the fact that due process was not followed according to the law. Organised labour and civil society groups were not consulted,” he said.

“There has also not been a significant improvement in the power supply situation since it was privatized.”

He also said DISCOs had promised to provide pre-paid meters for its consumers within 18 months, but had not met the expectations of the people.

“The DISCOs promised to give Nigerians meters in 18 months, but they failed. This is corruption and it is ripping Nigerians off their money,” he said.

Wabba said the increase in electricity tariff was not right because there was already a court injunction before Muhammed Idris, a justice of the federal high court, Lagos.

According to him, the case is between Toluwani Yemi-Adebiyi, a lawyer, versus the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and others, that there will be no increment until the determination of the substantive suit.

“The increment negates the present biting and prevailing economic situation and will further impoverish the people,” Wabba said.

He urged the government to halt the implementation of the new tariff, as well as audit the DISCOs since they have fully paid the privatisation money.

Also speaking, Bobboi Kaigama, TUC President, urged NERC not to implement the new tariff until there was a substantive improvement in the electricity supply situation.

“If by February 1, the federal government implements the policy, we will shut down all DISCOs.

There should be an increase indicated in service delivery, before the proposed new tariff,” he said.

In his remarks, Adeola Samuel-Ilori, the coordinator, Consumer Protection Forum, said the organisation had engaged distribution companies several times on the issue of estimated billing without result.

Samuel-Ilori said it was regrettable that estimated billing was passed by the national assembly and it had become statutory.

He, however, said that if the DISCOs were able to meter all Nigerians within the 18 months gestation period, the problem of estimated billing would have been solved.

Yemi-Adebiyi, who represented consumers at the meeting, said unless Nigerians were provided with meters within the 18 months’ time frame, any increase would be illegal.

He said anybody that circumvents the court order would be jailed.

Dasukigate: Nduka Obaigbena to cough out N670m within 2 weeks

Thisday publisher, Nduka Obaigbena has been given a two-week ultimatum to refund N670 million allegedly collected for unexecuted contracts.

Obaigbena told investigators that he never benefitted from slush funds from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

He said the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan paid the said sums to “ThisDay” and the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) as compensation for the bombing of the newspaper house by Boko Haram and the seizure of copies of many newspapers by the military.

He noted that there was a presidential proclamation by former President Jonathan that “ThisDay” will be compensated for the loss to Boko Haram.

He said Jonathan made the pledge after an inspection visit to the newspaper. Obaigbena was quizzed for two days on the activities of General Hydrocarbons and inflow into the company’s account from ONSA.

According to The Nation, the EFCC said: “What we are investigating is General Hydrocarbons. Records from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) indicated that Nduka Obaigbena is a director of the company.

“ONSA reported that General Hydrocarbons was one of the companies that received payments purportedly for contracts without contract documents or approval.

“Between December 8, 2014 and May 23, 2015, Obaigbena received N670 million from ONSA. The reasons stated on the payment mandates are as follows: First tranche of N150 million (environmental security project) and the remaining tranches(payment for energy consultancy)

“Obaigbena said he was paid compensation of N550 million for the bombing of “ThisDay” office in Abuja but there is no nexus between this payment and the money he collected for contracts. None of the sums shows that what he got from ONSA was compensation.

“The complaint before us is that the company was given money without contractual agreement.

“By all records, Obaigbena was paid for unexecuted contracts. It is government’s funds and he has to refund the N670million”, an EFCC official said. Obaigbena was said to have signed an undertaking to refund the money in question.

CHANGING FORTUNE OF THE NIGERIAN POLICE

Mr. Solomon Arase, Inspector-General of Police.

By Solomon Makinde.

Image of the Nigerian police seems to be soaring since the advent of the sitting Inspector-General, Mr. Solomon Arase.

Inheriting a police that successive police authorities had battled tooth and nails to make citizens watchdogs had been tough but the the Force is today being perceived with the assumption in office of the recent three nation's police bosses.

This is not far-fetched. Citizens who spoke to this blog expressed satisfaction with the police response time and enhanced relationship between the communities and the police in recent times.

Aiding that, according to one of our respondents, is the timely response of the Police Call Centre's,  especially in the nation's capital, Abuja.

According to Sola, (not real name), he received a distress call from a neighbour living about three streets away from him on a given day and he had to browse the internet to get the Abuja Police Control Room.

To his amazement,  the phone was immediately answered and he was promptly linked up with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of his area.

The DPO linked him up with the Patrol Team on duty and in a jiffy, a detachment was at hand to save what would have been a free day for armed bandits who caught residents of his area unawares.

He particularly commended the police for the feedback procedures throughout their operation and thanked them for saving the day in favour of the helpless citizens.

He therefore encouraged citizens to collaborate with the police authorities by volunteering intelligence and boost relationship between the security agencies and the community as a way of nipping crimes in the bud.

Sola noted that everything is not bad among men and officers of the police, he urged citizens to change their perceptions about the force as a way of building confidence among all stakeholders for effective policing and secured society.

8 Amazing Health Benefits of Watermelon

Watermelon is by far, one of the most powerful, body-healing fruits out there! The amazing health benefits of watermelon cover everything from your brain all the way to the cells in your feet.

Raw foods, unlimited fruit and vegetables, fresh cracked coconut water, yoga, eco-adventures and so much more!

The best time to indulge in this fresh, succulent, juicy melon, is summertime, when they are in season and deliver an array of nutrients, vitamin and minerals.

Watermelon is incredibly hydrating (up to 92% water!) and is naturally low-fat. Make this melon a part of your daily diet and you will reap amazing benefits that range from improving cardiovascular health to nourishing your eyes and revving up your immune system! Read below and see for yourself!

Cardiovascular & Bone Health

The lycopene in watermelon is especially important for our cardiovascular health and is now being recognized as an important factor in promoting bone health. Consuming large amounts of watermelon has also been correlated with improved cardiovascular function because it improves blood flow via vasodilation (relaxation of blood pressure). Dietary lycopene (from foods like watermelon or tomatoes) reduces oxidative stress which normally reduces the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts (the two major bone cells involved in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis) – this means stronger bones for those consuming lycopene-rich foods. Watermelon is also rich in potassium which helps to retain calcium in your body, resulting in stronger bones and joints.

Reduces Body Fat

The citrulline in watermelon has been shown to reduce the accumulation of fat in our fat cells. Citrulline is an amino acid which converts into arginine with help from the kidneys. When our bodies absorb citrulline it can take the step of converting into arginine if so required. Citrulline, when consumed, has the ability to (through a series of steps) block the activity of TNAP (tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase) which makes our fat cells create less fat, and thus helps prevent over-accumulation of body fat.

Anti-inflammatory & Antioxidant Support

Watermelon is rich in phenolic compounds like flavonoids, carotenoids, and triterpenoids. The carotenoid lycopene in watermelon is particularly beneficial in reducing inflammation and neutralizing free radicals. The tripterpenoid cucurbitacin E is also present in watermelon, which provides anti-inflammatory support by blocking activity of cyclo-oxygenase enzymes which normally lead to increased inflammatory support. Make sure you pick ripe watermelons, because they contain higher amounts of these beneficial phenolic compounds.

Diuretic & Kidney Support

Watermelon is a natural diuretic which helps increase the flow of urine, but does not strain the kidneys (unlike alcohol and caffeine). Watermelons helps the liver process ammonia (waste from protein digestion) which eases strain on the kidneys while getting rid of excess fluids.

Muscle & Nerve Support

Rich in potassium, watermelon is a great natural electrolyte and thus helps regulate the action of nerves and muscles in our body. Potassium determines the degree and frequency with which our muscles contract, and controls the excitation of nerves in our body.

Alkaline-forming

Watermelons have an alkaline-forming effect in the body when fully ripe. Eating lots of alkaline-forming foods (fresh, ripe, fruit and vegetables) can help reduce your risk of developing disease and illness caused by a high-acid diet (namely, meat, eggs and dairy).

Improves Eye Health

Watermelon is a wonderful source of beta-carotene (that rich red hue of watermelon = beta carotene) which is converted in the body to vitamin A. It helps produce the pigments in the retina of the eye and protects against age-related macular degeneration as well as prevents night blindness. Vitamin A also maintains healthy skin, teeth, skeletal and soft tissue, and mucus membranes.

Immune Support, Wound Healing & Prevents Cell Damage

The vitamin C content in watermelon is astoundingly high. Vitamin C is great at improving our immune system by maintaining the redox integrity of cells and thereby protecting them from reactive oxygen species (which damages our cells and DNA). The role of vitamin C in healing wounds has also been observed in numerous studies because it is essential to the formation of new connective tissue. The enzymes involved in forming collagen (the main component of wound healing) cannot function without vitamin C. If you are suffering from any slow-healing wounds, up your intake of vitamin C heavy fruit.

Buhari fighting Boko Haram with weapons I bought – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has declared that the current administration was fighting the war against Boko Haram with the arms bought under his administration.

He told France 24 that the insurgency caught the country unawares but that his government laid a solid foundation for it to be wiped out.

He said, “The new government is working hard and I believe they are still using the equipment we procured. Though the budget is still being debated, no new equipment has been bought; so even those equipment the President is using to prosecute the war against Boko Haram are those equipment we procured.

“When Boko Haram started in Nigeria, we had no terror experience. Yes, we had armed robbery and other common crimes, but terrorism was different because the people involved were not afraid to die.

“So, you need a different mechanism to confront terrorism, you need superior technology, so that you will be able to stop them even before the attack. We never had the equipment, but when we were confronted, we started acquiring and before I left office we built reasonable capacity and I believe with what we left behind and also with what the new government will acquire, they will be able to prosecute this terror war to a reasonable conclusion.”

Jonathan believed that the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was due to the loss of the 2015 election but expressed optimism that the former ruling party would soon gain stability.

He maintained that “The PDP definitely will have some minor issues, it is expected. We lost the presidency and definitely we will have some kind of leadership problems.

“When you have a president, everybody looks up to the president. But when you no longer have the president, it becomes difficult for the party to have strong leadership.

“I believe whatever you observe will be sorted out. Leaders of the party, elders of the party have been meeting and all this perceived disagreement will soon be sorted out.

“Every political party has misunderstanding, it is not new, it is always there. From the beginning of PDP, even before I got to Abuja as a vice-president and president, there were instances when the chairman of the party will be asked to step down. And some officers leave from time to time when there are issues. So, what is happening is not new but I promise you that PDP will stabilize.

“In fact, by March this year, we are going in to elect officers at the lowest levels of the wards to the local government, to the states, to the zones, then of course the national officers will be elected; that is just in March. So the party will bounce back, whatever you are perceiving, it always happens and we will get over it”, he concluded.
